Author's Comments

There is a specific moment in late October when the sun drops behind the Virginia side and the monuments across the river catch the last warm light before the city turns blue. Belle Haven gives you that moment more reliably than almost anywhere I know. The marina faces northwest, which means the Washington Monument and the Capitol sit in profile across the water, small enough to feel like a painting and close enough to still read as a skyline. I come here for the foreground as much as the distance. The dock pilings, the moored boats, the reeds along the shore all give you something to build a composition around, which matters because the skyline itself is far enough away that a wide lens alone will leave you with a lot of empty sky. A longer focal length compresses the river and brings the city forward. Both are worth making. In summer the osprey nest on the pilings and the park gets busy in a way that changes its character. Spring and fall are quieter and the light is cleaner. The Wilson Bridge to the south is its own subject once the sky goes deep blue and the bridge lights come on, and if you are patient enough to stay through full dusk you can often make two very different photographs from the same spot within twenty minutes of each other. Bring something warm. The wind off the Potomac in October has more edge than you expect.
