Caroline Street is the prime photography corridor. Evening light on the Federal-era brick storefronts is exceptional. The Rappahannock at sunset from Riverside Park is beautiful.

What strikes me first about Fredericksburg is not any single building but the accumulated weight of the whole street. Caroline Street runs south from the river through several unbroken blocks of Federal brick, and in late afternoon in October the light comes in at an angle that makes the mortar joints visible, that makes the brick itself look like it holds heat from another century. Which in some sense it does. This is not a reconstructed streetscape. That is the thing to understand before you arrive. These storefronts stood through the war, through occupation, through the long indifference of the twentieth century, and they are here in a way that few antebellum commercial districts anywhere in the South can claim. The scale is human and the patina is genuine. I find golden hour here more rewarding than I expected from a place with a modest photographic reputation. The east-facing facades catch morning light cleanly, but it is the west-facing upper floors and the cross-light on the sidewalk that I want. Come in November when the angle is lower and the trees have dropped. The brick reads differently then, less postcard-warm, more austere. Walk down to Riverside Park after you have finished with Caroline Street. The Rappahannock at dusk is quiet in a way the street is not, and the light on the water in November is the color of old glass. Two different photographs, two different moods, and the walk between them takes ten minutes.
