Occoquan Historic District

Occoquan Historic District

Occoquan, VA

A charming mill town where the Occoquan River meets the Bull Run - antique shops, Victorian storefronts, and river views that feel nothing like the suburban sprawl surrounding it.

Practical Tips
Mill Street along the river is the prime shooting location. Shoot from the Route 123 bridge for river town panoramas. Halloween decorations and fall color are both stunning.

You drive through a lot of nothing to get here. Or more accurately, you drive through a lot of something that all looks the same - the strip malls and subdivisions of Prince William County, the kind of landscape that numbs you by the third traffic light. And then you cross the bridge over the Occoquan River and the road drops and suddenly you are somewhere else entirely. Mill Street is the heart of it. Victorian storefronts pressed up against the water, antique shops with their goods spilling onto the sidewalks, the river moving slowly past the backs of the buildings. In October the town leans fully into the season - pumpkins on every step, garlands on every railing, and the surrounding trees turning the whole river corridor a color that flatters the brick. The photograph I keep trying to make here is from the Route 123 bridge, looking down at the town with the river curling around it. Late afternoon in November is when this works best, when the light rakes across the rooflines and the water goes dark and reflective beneath. It is a small composition. You do not need a wide lens to hold it. What you need is the right hour and the patience to let a boat pass through the frame, or not. The town is quiet most weekday mornings. I have walked Mill Street at eight in the morning with a coffee and had the place almost to myself, the shop owners sweeping their stoops, the river doing what rivers do. It is not a grand place. That is the point.
