Ten minutes from downtown Charlottesville and the city disappears. That is the trick of Ragged Mountain, and it is not a small one. The reservoir sits in a bowl of hardwood forest that feels genuinely old, and the trails around its edge have the hush of somewhere much further from a university town than it actually is. I come here in the shoulder seasons. April when the understory is just beginning to fill in, and late October when the oaks and hickories are turning and the water goes the color of slate under a low sky. Morning is the hour. The mist comes up off the reservoir reliably in both spring and fall, and if you are on the dam before the sun clears the ridge to the east, you get a few minutes where the whole basin looks like something lifted out of a different century. The dam itself is where the panorama opens. Rolling foothills behind the water, forest coming right down to the edge, no houses, no road sounds. It is the kind of view that does not photograph as dramatically as it feels, and I have made peace with that. Some places are better to sit in than to shoot. The trails lower down are quieter still, and muddy after rain, and I rarely pass more than a handful of people even on a good Saturday. This is not a destination landscape. It is a neighborhood wild, a place that belongs to the people who know to come early, and it rewards the kind of visit where you are not really trying to bring anything home.
